We’re often asked why we say "gluten friendly" instead of "gluten free." It’s a great question, and the answer comes down to Australian food law.
In Australia, the term “gluten free” isn’t just a label, it’s a legal standard.
If something is called gluten free, it must meet very strict rules set by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). That means:
🥣 No gluten ingredients at all, not even tiny traces of wheat, rye, barley or oats
🧪 No detectable gluten in testing, even a few parts per million is too much
🧼 Made in a totally gluten free kitchen, no shared equipment, no cross-contact, ever
📦 All ingredients must be certified gluten free, even during transport and storage
In other words, a truly gluten free product must be made from start to finish in an environment that is completely free of gluten, from the ingredient sourcing to the cooking and packing.
This is especially important for people with coeliac disease or serious gluten allergies, where even a crumb can cause harm.
Back in 2007, we launched what was then Australia’s first gluten free brownie gift box (pre the legal requirements - we wer making brownies that today are called Gluten-Friendly)
Why?
Because gluten free options barely existed, and someone close to us needed something better.
Our aunt was diagnosed with coeliac disease at age 65. Social, vibrant, and always dining with friends, she suddenly found herself excluded. She would bring her own gluten free sandwich to cafés just to be part of the table.
That broke our hearts.
So we developed a celebratory gluten free brownie, something beautiful she could enjoy without feeling left out. Back then, gluten free was barely a category. We weren’t doing it to chase a trend. We were doing it to make a difference. They were called Gluten Free back then however have since become known as Gluten Friendly because they are not made in a dedicated kitchen.
Labeling changes aside, the spirit of our oriignial intent still lives in our gluten friendly brownie today.
A few weeks ago, a Brisbane dad called us after buying our gluten friendly brownies for his daughter’s birthday. She had long missed out on treats, and finally, she could enjoy something special again.
