When you are attending a birthday yourself, small problems are usually easy to solve.

You can collect the cake. Move it into the refrigerator. Find the candles. Adjust the serving time. Call the restaurant. Carry the cake from one place to another.

When you are hundreds or thousands of kilometres away, you cannot do any of those things.

So trust becomes more important.

The sender needs confidence that the cake will be made, that it will reach the right address and that the person receiving it will understand what to do with it.

This is probably the most useful advice we can give somebody sending a cake from afar.

Ask yourself:

Where will the person actually be when the cake arrives?

A home address is not always the best answer.

If the recipient works in an office, a workplace may be easier because reception is attended and refrigeration may be available.

If they are a university student, consider whether they will actually be at their accommodation during the day.

If the celebration is happening at somebody else's house, it may make more sense to deliver the cake there.

If it is going to a restaurant or venue, check beforehand that the venue can receive and refrigerate it.

The most thoughtful delivery address is often simply the place where the cake will fit most naturally into the recipient's day.

Yes — but a completely unexpected perishable delivery is not always the easiest surprise to manage.

One simple approach is to tell the recipient:

“Something is arriving for you today.”

When the sender cannot attend the birthday, the message inside the order becomes particularly important.

It does not need to be long.

Sometimes a few lines written in your own language are more meaningful than a perfectly composed message.
