About Lunar New Year

The Lunar New Year is a holiday celebrated by about 2 Billion people. It's a happy holiday focused on a very rich tradition and the hope for prosperity and good fortune.

The food festivities begin on the 26th day of the month before the Lunar New Year. This was January 28 2022. On this day tradition has it that festive cakes are prepared. These cakes are called "Gao" in Mandarin and "Go" in Cantonese. Eating the cakes is said to help  with improvement and growth in the coming year. 

On the 28th day of the last lunar month, homes are cleaned. I like this idea. Moving out unwanted items is said to remove the bad luck that may have developed in the previous year. A clean out for a clean new year. 

The actual day for the holiday changes as it is based on the cycles of the Moon. In 2022 the Lunar New Year starts on the evening of Jan 31 and ends on the 15 February.  Traditionally on the 15th day of the first month of the Lunar New Year there is a celebration of lanterns known as the Shangyuan Festival.

Important in this holiday tradition is spending time and appreciating family. A celebratory meal is usually enjoyed with family on New Years Eve. 

Food as usual plays a major role in the Lunar New Year celebration. Families come together to eat and celebrate. Food choices can include lucky foods like Rice Dumplings and Walnut Cookies. 

Our family celebrated last night. We're no experts but we do love a celebration. We also shared gratitude for each other and a delicious menu of rice dumplings, duck pancakes, pak choy vegetable and dim sum.
